We have been learning about endangered birds. Our teacher Miss Bonsor got us to
each to make a bird poster about one native bird in particular. I chose the Kiwi to
find out information and make a poster about about the Kiwi.
- What a Kiwi feeds on: Kiwi eat earthworms insects and berries.
- Kiwis eggs are about the size of six hens.
- Kiwis have very week chests because their bones are very small and easy to smash.
- Dogs are a major threat to Kiwis and even to pick it up with their mouths can kill a Kiwi.
- In 1987 over 500 Kiwis were killed by a wild german Shepherd in a Northland forest.
- The Kiwi is a curious bird it can not fly, has loose hair like feathers and long whiskers.
- The Kiwi is largely nocturnal, it burrows in the ground,It is the only bird to be nocturnal that has nostrils at the end of its very bill and literally sniffs out food witch includes soil invertabrates and fruit.
- Now days scientists are working to protect Kiwis and use muzzled dogs to sniff the birds out for study.
- It makes it easy to find food to eat because they can smell things easier with their nostrils at the end of their beak and hear their food.
